The Central Residential District showcases 34 homes built between 1891 and 1941, featuring diverse architectural styles and a portion of Brookings’ urban arboretum.

When you visit the Children's Museum of South Dakota, you’ll experience exhibits and events shaped by the Kidoodle Council, a youth advisory board made up of Brookings area 6 to 12-year-olds. These ambassadors help generate ideas for events, provide feedback on gift shop items and guide designers in creating new exhibits. Being part of the council gives kids a behind-the-scenes look at the museum, including shadowing the museum staff and contributing to enhance the visitor experience.
This year, the Kidoodle Council planned Mama’s Fun Run and assisted with the Liftoff event for the latest exhibit, Lunar Life, among other activities. Applications for the 2025 Kidoodle Council open in October.
