CVB Executive Dir. Job Opening

The Brookings Convention & Visitors Bureau is searching for a new Executive Director. 

The Brookings CVB is a small, non-profit agency contracted by the City of Brookings for the primary purpose of marketing the city and recruiting events that stimulate the local economy. While the word “tourism” in South Dakota makes most folks think of the Black Hills, tourism – or the visitor industry – is big business for Brookings as well. Think SDSU sports, Swiftel Center events, business conferences, or pheasant hunting, and you can get a small picture of tourism within Brookings. As such, tourism rightly sets within the City of Brookings’ long-range strategic vision as a force for economic development.

After 7 years at the helm of the CVB, Johnson is stepping down as the Executive Director.  “It was not an easy or quick decision. I love this job, our team, the passionate people on our board, our partners and the Brookings community. There’s no way we could have accomplished everything we did these past years without our partners and the community support. The Brookings tagline is ‘Bring Your Dreams’ and we really mean that here,” stated Johnson.  As for future plans, Johnson will try out a new title.  “Well at least for now, I’m planning to become the Chief Operating Officer of our household, a totally new role for me.  I’ve never done a strategic plan for a household before, but that’s exactly what I plan on doing.  Oh, and I’m going to create job descriptions for everyone!” laughs Johnson.

Job Purpose

The Executive Director is responsible for the development of innovative marketing campaigns and city brand management, the pursuit and execution of event and conference opportunities, and the successful leadership of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management/Administration, Marketing, Advertising, Hospitality or related field
  • Strong relationship builder
  • Experience in marketing and brand management
  • 5+ years management experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks, Adobe Creative Suite
